The 2017-18 PRAS Opening Ceremony

The 2017/2018 PRAS Students at IDC

This year, 151 students were accepted to join Telfed’s popular PRAS programme, amongst them 92 new-comers. The programme offers a generous scholarship to students who undertake 94 hours of community service each year, assisting the elderly, new olim and families with special needs.  Each year, students from around the country gather together for the opening ceremony, which was held at the IDC in Herzliya. Dana Levy Tavor, head of the scholarship department at Telfed and CEO Dorron Kline welcomed the students, followed by an inspirational speech from the Fed's Chairman Batya Shmukler and Chair of the Scholarships Committee, Shely Cohen. Amongst the guests were past Telfed Chairman Dave Bloom and former Executive Director, Sidney Shapiro.

One of the PRAS coordinators, Elisha Babian shared his family's history and the story of their journey from Iran to Israel. He described the unique challenges that new immigrants face and shared his years of experience in the PRAS programme, quoting the Persian saying that "One hand cannot clap on its own”, illustrating the dependence we have on each other in order to succeed.

The gathering provides a forum not only for socializing, but also enriches the students, with a programme including addresses from leading experts in Israel. Psychologist Diana Finzi presented on the topic of the psychology of children, Maya Ferbstein from the 'Lotem' organization held a seminar discussing the world of special needs, and for returning students, an informative lecture about community development was presented by 'Tevel Betzdek' about their work in Nepal.

We wish all our students the best of luck for the coming academic year and much success in their volunteering endeavors!  For more information on the PRAS Programme, contact Simone Pinkas:
