From borewors and biltong to a Villiage Green vegetarian

When one thinks of typical South African food, what generally comes to mind is meat; more specifically, boerewors, biltong and braaivleis. So you may be surprised to discover that one the proprietors of the new branch of the Village Green vegetarian restaurant, in Jerusalem’s German Colony neighborhood, is Bryan Choritz, a former Capetonian. (See pic - LHS) Additionally, the owner and founder of the original Village Green, Barry Sibul, is South African as well, and in fact a cousin of Bryan. (See pic - RHS) So now we know there are at least two vegetarians from South Africa!

Bryan made aliya in 2004, shortly thereafter met his wife Noa (daughter of a former Jo’burger), lived briefly in Ra’anana, and Jerusalem before settling with their two kids, in Efrat, Gush Etzion region.  Bryan, a South African qualified chartered accountant, worked in various accounting positions in the years following his aliya, including working in the accounting profession, in hi-tech as a financial manager as well as in mortgage brokering. As time went by, however, he began to look for something more interesting, dynamic and people-oriented. When the opportunity came to establish a new restaurant along Jerusalem’s ever popular “Restaurant Row” – the German Colony – including working alongside family members as well as promoting healthy, socially-conscious eating, Bryan jumped at the chance. And though the road has been challenging he has never looked back.

Like many South Africans, Bryan is fitness conscious and enjoys participating in sports, such as distance running and triathlons and he is also a keen member of the Ra’anana Cricket team. So it seemed only natural to continue this devotion to healthy living in terms of business as well as personal beliefs.

Village Green Hamoshava is the latest installment of a concept that began over 30 years ago in the heart of downtown Jerusalem. Established in 1980 by Barry Sibul (originally from Somerset West) and family, The Village Green has been offering a unique variety of wholesome, healthy and truly delicious vegetarian/vegan cuisine. This past year, with the focus on healthy living and eating greater than ever before, it was decided to branch out and offer the same wholesome tastes and concepts in an additional new location. Whether you are Veggie, Vegan, Macrobiotic or a pure meat-eater who simply enjoys a delicious healthy meal, there will be options aplenty for all to enjoy.

House specialties include quiches, pies, lasagnas, salad bar and of course the famous soups. Village Green Hamoshava also boasts to-die-for cakes, amazing muffins and deliciously, home-baked breads that come in a variety of grains such as Whole-wheat, Spelt and Rye, with additional sour-dough options as alternative to yeast. All products are made from whole grains/flour and many of our ingredients are organic, as is our delicious coffee. The kashrut is Jerusalem Rabbinate Mehadrin and Village Green is also the proud holder of a “Tav Chevrati” (socially responsible certificate), so the food is not just good for you, but good for the environment and others.  Every effort is made to use recycled or recyclable goods when possible, as well locally grown organic fruits and vegetables.
