Several months ago a meeting took place at the home of Martin and Glenda Ellis in Raanana, hosting members of their South African community.  Glenda said: “We all enjoyed meeting Dr. Eric Setton and hearing about the wonderful things that Libi does for our soldiers.”We would now like to take this further and introduce the wonderful activities of the Libi Organisation to a larger segment of the ex-Southern African population in Israel.

The Libi Foundation is therefore honored to present to the Telfed web site readers a summation of its various activities:

THE LIBI FUND  was established in 1980 by the Prime Minister, the late Menachem Begin and the IDF's Chief of the General Staff, the late Rafael Eitan.
The Libi Fund is an independently-run, authorized Israeli non-profit organization " Amuta", registered with the Registrar of Non-Profit Organizations( Amutot) in Jerusalem
All members of the "Amuta" serve on a strictly volunteering basis.
The Libi Fund's day-to-day operations are run by a small team of regular IDF army officers, assisted by volunteers.
The Libi Fund's aim is to help the IDF to meet the needs of the soldiers in the educational, medical, religious and social fields, ( and especially for young soldiers coming from disadvantaged backgrounds and new-immigrant soldiers), in implementing projects not covered by the Army's regular budget.
All Libi's projects are subject to approval by the Chief of the General Staff, and all designated donations are applied in full to the relevant projects.
Among Libi's leading projects:
Education
•         "High School-Diplomas", whereby combat soldiers leave their units about
3 months prior to the end of their military service, so as to devote this period for the completion of their studies for a high-school diploma; the project opens the way for higher academic learning and a better opportunity for integration into Israeli society.
•         Soldiers from a poor socio-economic background- "Na'arei Raful" –
Courses at "Havat Hashomer" base in the north, for the completion of 10 years of   education and the learning of a vocation during their military service; they then leave the army with a basic education and a trade, paving the way for a brighter future in civilian life.
•         Integration of new-immigrant soldiers- special educational programs enabling them to study and improve their Hebrew and to learn about Judaism, Zionism and the history and geography of Israel.
•         Witnesses in Uniform – Every year the IDF sends officers and soldiers in uniform to participate in the Holocaust memorial ceremonies in Poland, imparting to them recognition of their heritage and history.
Medical – for IDF Medical Corps
•         Military Ambulances- the purchase of ambulances, and also of specially-armor protected ambulances for the swift evacuation of injured soldiers in battle.
•    Orthopedic and Physiotherapy Rehabilitation Centers for soldiers.
•         Trauma and Resuscitation Center at Tzirifin Base, "Manikins",( human patient simulators), the establishment of mobile and permanent medical clinics, etc.
•         Medical equipment – life-saving medical equipment needed, such as combat tourniquets, respirators, quick-clot combat gauze, blood containers.
•         Exercise and Recreational centers and equipment for soldiers.
•         Computers and other equipment for students at the new IDF/Hebrew University Hadassah Medical School in Jerusalem.
Religious needs
•         Synagogues- construction of new buildings and renovations to existing synagogues.
•         Mobile religious unit to visit small bases and camps
•         Sifrei Torah and other religious books and items.
Humanitarian and Social Welfare
•         Assistance to "Lone Soldiers".
•         Food vouchers, loans and grants for soldiers coming from needy families.
(All applications are carefully checked and handled discreetly).
