The Telfed - Modi'in Success Story

"Is this the information counter?". Modi'in is Israel's newest and fastest growing city. Modi'in is also the Hebrew word for "information". As the Aliyah Shaliach in South Africa in 2003, Hertzel Katz, a past-Telfed chairman visiting South Africa and I, started promoting the city of Modi'in as "The Next Ra'anana" for the South African Jewish community. Most people had never heard of the city before and those that knew Hebrew, thought that we were manning a general information table about Israel. How much has changed in 5 years, with the city of Modi'in being a household name today throughout Southern Africa. In 2003, thirty Southern African family resided in Modi'in. Today there are more than 230 such families!

Telfed, the South African Zionist Federation in Israel, together with the State of Israel, is celebrating her 60th birthday this year,. Since the establishment of the State, Telfed has helped to facilitate and introduce many Southern African groups to successful housing projects such as Efrat, Kochav Yair, Moshav Manof, Tzur Yigal and now Modi'in. In 2003, Y.H. Dimri – a well known building contractor in Israel, agreed to offer special conditions and reduced prices for housing units in the "Dimri Towers" in Modi'in, to purchasers referred to him by Telfed. This led to the sale of over 100 apartments! Owing to the tremendous success of this ventue, Mr Dimri has once again agreed to extend these special conditions to Telfed, in his new project, "Dimri Towers on the Park". This is a realistic opportunity to obtain attractively priced housing in the up-market Kaiser neighbourhood of Modi'in.

Recognising the huge potential for Southern African Aliyah in Modi'in, the Ministry of Absorption, in conjunction with Telfed, the Jewish Agency and the Municipality of Modi'in, initiated the "Communal Aliyah Programme – Klita Kehilatit" in the city. The programme includes extra financial benefits, Hebrew Ulpan hours, tours, cultural events and a project coordinator (Cherie Albucher – herself a SA Olah), with direct access to the relevant municipal and government bodies. The Southern African programme was so successful in Modi'in, that it was soon copied for French, American and British Olim.

The secret to successful Klita is a strong supportive community. Telfed is fortunate to have a vibrant Modi'in regional committee, headed by Renee Penn. The committee welcomes all new Southern African Olim to the city and organises regular picnics and get-togethers for the new and veteran SA Olim, (see attached picture). Having this strong committee enabled Telfed to embark on a unique initiative – a "Dirat Kelet". This is an "Initial Absorption Apartment", which provides Southern African Olim with a first address and 2-4 weeks Kelet (initial absorption), before having to find their own rental apartment. Modi'in does not have an absorption centre, so the Telfed Dirat Kelet greatly relieves the stress of having to organise an apartment from overseas, before making Aliyah.

From those early days, (not so long ago), the "information counter" has grown in leaps and bounds. Modi'in – the city of the Macabees, a symbol of Hasmonean heroism and the conservation of the Jewish and national identity of the people of Israel - eagerly welcomes the influx of Southern African Aliyah.
