"Teachers open the door. You enter by yourself." (Chinese Proverb)

Telfed wishes to ensure that students are prepared to walk up to the door of knowledge and step in. This depends on how the world of knowledge is presented to them by their teachers...

With this in mind, the Scholarships and Endowments Committee of Telfed, chaired by Adele Bassin, has provided scholarships for students to attend the acclaimed Kaye Teacher's Training College in Be'er Sheva. "This not only helps to ensure the next generation of Israel's teachers, but also supports the development of the Negev region," said Susan Sharon, the Telfed staff member on the committee.

Below is a letter received from Miki Israel, the head of the Student Forum of Kaye College:

"On behalf of all the students at Kaye College, who have received scholarships, I would like to thank you for your continuous support that has made, and still makes it possible for us to continue our studies and fulfill our dreams to become teachers in Israel.

Dear friends, we would like to tell you that the South African Zionist Federation (Israel) is an example to us all. By your generous donations we see that education means a lot to you.  The financial donation is very important, but over and above that you have fulfilled our dreams that we have been striving towards for years. We will not forget your kindness and we will try, in the future to continue the goal you have set to improve education in Israel.

I would like to say a few words about what your contribution has done for me personally.  It is not easy to be a student in Israel, a student needs to pay, not only for his studies, but also for his general living expenses, and more than once students find themselves questioning the possibility of continuing studying.  I am one of these students. During my studies, I was thinking of giving up my future as a teacher and stop my studies since I couldn't afford the financial burden, but thanks to you and your generous donation I am getting closer to achieve what I started out to do.  I promise that my thanks to you will not end here in words only, it will be fulfilled in the classroom in front of a new generation of Israeli students."

We wish Miki the best of luck with his studies and we are confident that with teachers like him, the door of knowledge will be held wide open for Israel's future students.
