Honouring a hero: A braai for 400 soldiers

In July, the Telfed community – donors, volunteers, and staff – came together with Grills of Hope to host a braai for 400 soldiers stationed near Ashkelon. This wasn’t just any meal – it was a powerful gesture of unity and remembrance, dedicated to the memory of fallen South African-born soldier, Nitai Metodi Z”L.

Nitai, a resident of Ashkelon and the son of South African Olah Lara Metodi, was tragically killed in service. In a remarkable and poignant turn of events, the braai – originally planned for an earlier date – was rescheduled and ultimately took place on Nitai’s first yahrzeit.

As the sun dipped below the horizon and the comforting aroma of grilled food filled the air, the soldiers gathered to honour one of their own. Just before heading into Gaza, they stood together in silence – a raw, real and unforgettable moment that underscored the deep bonds of solidarity and sacrifice.

This moving tribute was made possible by the generosity of our sponsors from South Africa, many of whom were present to share in the experience firsthand. Your support ensured that this event was not only a nourishing meal, but also a deeply meaningful act of remembrance.

Thank you for standing with us to honour, remember, and express our deep gratitude to the courageous soldiers who continue to serve with dedication, compassion, and bravery.

We continue to pray for the safety and success of our soldiers, and for the immediate return of all the hostages.
