The book ‘The Jewish Country Communities of Limpopo/ Northern Transvaal’ recalls the history of the Jewish country communities in the northern part of South Africa from the first pioneers, who came from England and Germany, then from Lithuania and Latvia, at the end of the 18th Century until their demise at the end of the 20th Century.

It includes the family trees and stories of the large families living in the area and how they intermarried and were connected to each other. Interesting anecdotes are included about the lives of these Jews living in remote areas and how they tried to maintain their Jewish roots despite many obstacles. Included are many interesting photographs depicting their lives and the way they lived.

The towns included in the book are Pietersburg, Potgietersrus, Naboomspruit, Nylstroom, Louis Trichardt, Messina and Tzaneen, as well as smaller villages such as Soekmekaar and Roedtan.

The book costs NIS 100 and is available from Charlotte Wiener at [email protected] or via Telfed (Dana Ben Chail[email protected]).
